My story
A life in Japan.
A return to running.
Writing, teaching, coaching, and learning.
I’m an Australian writer and university lecturer, and a long-term resident of Asia and Japan. I’m an ex-surfer and a masters marathoner. I’ve been living in Japan for over 35 years.
I have a family here: a lovely wife and two grown sons who are now out and about pursuing their own dreams.
I love running and I’m still training, though my focus these days is on writing, teaching, coaching, and learning. I turned 62 in August 2026.
As for my running, I ran cross country in junior high school and basically didn’t run again until my early 40s. My great-grandfather was a renowned foot-racer in his day, over the 100-yard dash, and my father was a mile specialist.
Still, I don’t think too much of this running pedigree filtered down to me. I actually think I’m more like my mother: smart and persistent. And I believe these qualities are of more value than natural talent.
As far as I’m concerned, we were indeed “Born to Run,” and just how far or fast is completely up to us. If you’re interested in making the most of your running potential, I hope you can join us in going further and faster than you ever thought possible.
Regards,
Scott Andrew Brown
