Dani Egan

I’m an Australian writer and university lecturer, and a long-term resident of Asia and Japan. I’m an ex-surfer and a masters marathoner. I’ve been living in Japan for over 35 years.

I have a family here: a lovely wife and two grown sons who are now out and about pursuing their own dreams.

I love running and I’m still training, though my focus these days is on writing, teaching, coaching, and learning. I turned 62 in August 2026.

As for my running, I ran cross country in junior high school and basically didn’t run again until my early 40s. My great-grandfather was a renowned foot-racer in his day, over the 100-yard dash, and my father was a mile specialist.

Still, I don’t think too much of this running pedigree filtered down to me. I actually think I’m more like my mother: smart and persistent. And I believe these qualities are of more value than natural talent.

As far as I’m concerned, we were indeed “Born to Run,” and just how far or fast is completely up to us. If you’re interested in making the most of your running potential, I hope you can join us in going further and faster than you ever thought possible.

Regards,
Scott Andrew Brown

Samurai Running.

Practical philosophy insights for body, mind, and soul.

What makes Samurai Running unique is its holistic approach. Alongside running techniques, it explores the philosophy beneath the sport: how wisdom from samurai, Chinese, and Greek traditions can guide modern runners through life’s challenges.

Balancing family life with personal fitness is a common struggle. The book offers insights on finding balance and taking an honest approach to ambition—ideas that can enrich anyone’s life, including those who don’t run.

A book from heaven.

What does success in running look like? That depends on who you ask. So I asked the best: those whose experience and results had made them household names in long-distance running.

In this book, I conduct imagined yet deeply researched interviews with six iconic, now-deceased coaches who revolutionized the sport and produced Olympic champions, world-record holders, and everyday runners who defied their limits.
